Historical Perspective

17th CenturyDocks established at Rotherhythe and Royal Navy Dockyard at Deptford. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here in 1620.
1696Howland Great Wet Dock dug out to form the largest dock of its time. Renamed Greenland Dock in 1763.
1801-1809Grand Surrey Canal built, starting at Wilkinson's Gun Wharf in Rotherhithe. Canal completed only to Camberwell, (4.5 miles), despite plans to extend it all the way to Portsmouth.
Post-1945Docks unable to cater to the container system adopted by the shipping industry.
1960'sPepys Estate constructed to critical acclaim and surrounding area converted to residential uses. The south west retained more industrial uses.
1969Docks finally closed for lack of custom.
1970'sGrand Surrey Canal closed, drained and filled in with general waste which was highly contaminated.
1980's and early 1990'sSurrey Docks extensively redeveloped and renamed Surrey Quays. 5,500 new homes built, South Dck converted into a marina and Greenland Dock into a watersports centre.
1999New facility constructed at Marine Wharf West by Jet Stationary.
2007Jet Stationary went into administration
2008Marine Wharf West site acquired by Berkeley Homes. Jet Stationary building demolished, after tenant relocated to Woolwich.
